Solitary Reaper – A New Anthology of English Poetry Notes

Q. No. 01: – What do you understand from the song of the reaper sings in the poem?

Answer:

Wordsworth is known as a lover of nature. He loves the objects of nature with a sense of devotion. He hates the city life and likes to live in the company of green trees, Shining stars and hills. Among human beings, he loves common people. During a tour of Scotland, he comes across a highland girl. She is reaping in a field and singing a song. Her song is melodious and sweet. The valley is peaceful and calm. Her song disturbs the silence of the valley. The poet is greatly impressed by her song. The song is soothing in its effects. The poet does not understand the song but he still enjoys it.

The girl’s song reminds him of the song of the nightingale. The song brings the reader into the musical and romantic world of birds. The writer too shares the joy of girl’s song. Although he does not quite understand the theme of the song. As she is singing in her mother’s tongue. He wishes to know what the song is about. But nobody is there to tell him. However, he guesses the song may be about tragic incident. It may be contains some unhappy events of the past. It may be about some natural sorrow of grief. But the poet has no concern with theme of the song. However, he is greatly impressed with her song. He stays there sometime and listen the song. He advises the travelers to walk away silently. The poet remembers the song in the whole life.

As Wordsworth is a true romantic poet. He combines all the elements of romantic school of poetry. There are references to the beautiful land. He appreciates the sweetness of girl’s song and takes us to the romantic land like Arabia. The poem is written simple and direct language. Apart from is simplicity the poem is rich in musical quality.

 Answer:

“Solitary Reaper” is a romantic poem in its nature. It explains the poet’s deep love for nature. It is one of the early poems of Wordsworth. The subject matter of the poem is quite common and rustic as Wordsworth’s poetry deals with the problems of common people. The highland girl is also a common girl. She is innocent and lovely in her charm. She is rustic in her manners. The romanticism in the poem is quite evident.
